Wedding Gift Etiquette for Guests

By Sara Margulis, CEO & Founder

If you've ever received a wedding invitation you've probably asked yourself: Do I need to give a gift? What is the appropriate amount for a cash gift? What if I have to travel to the wedding or I've spent money on pre-wedding activities?

We know these questions can not only be difficult to answer, but also lead to stress between friends and family if not addressed properly. Don't worry, we'll make sure you celebrate the wedding couple with the perfect gift!

THE CHOICE OF WHAT OR HOW MUCH TO GIVE IS ALWAYS YOURS!

There is no minimum or maximum to spend. Yet, you do need to decide how much YOU are comfortable with. Here are some factors we recommend you consider:

  • First and foremost: Consult your budget. You must know how much you can AFFORD to spend! (If that amount isn't much, there's always the option to create something meaningful.)
  • Consider the average wedding gift amount -- Honeyfund gifts average about $150.
  • How well do you know the couple? Spend as much as $250+ for close friends or family, as little as $50 for coworkers or casual acquaintances.
  • Did the couple give you a wedding gift? Spending much more (or less) can be awkward.
  • Did you attend pre-wedding festivities? Or, are you traveling to attend a destination wedding? Most couples are not surprised to receive less in these situations.

IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND...

Guests invited to a wedding ceremony should always send a gift, regardless of whether they can attend. Shipping is preferable to bringing a gift, as it reduces wedding-day stress for the couple. Especially if the event is a destination wedding.

Guests invited to a reception only may give a gift if they wish, by it isn't required. The same rule applies if you receive a wedding announcement and haven't been invited to an event.

SEND YOUR GIFT AS CLOSE TO THE WEDDING AS POSSIBLE

The old adage that you have a year to give a wedding gift is just plain myth. Invited guests should send a gift promptly to avoid confusion and awkward feelings.

GIVE FROM THE HEART

Perhaps most important of all, be sure your gift comes from the heart. The couple has included you in their special day for the simple reason that you are important to them. Your gift should reflect your unique relationship.
